06 Aug Arbella Performs in the 2012 Salem Maritime Festival August 4 2012
When I first attended the Salem Maritime Festival several years ago, I thought there was only one thing missing from this fabulous maritime event. There were old ships, live demos, things for the kids to do, kites to make and fly on the beach, period re-enactors, free cruises in the harbor, live music, but I thought a DRUM CORPS (namely ARBELLA) would really add to the festival get the crowd going! So it was with a certain sense of amazement that I watched our color guard, clad in our familiar old uniforms, arrive at Derby Wharf today to participate in this great festival this weekend.
Due to low brass numbers, we opted to perform to some recorded classic drum corps pieces. It was one hot and muggy day! Most of the crowd hid in the craft tent to keep out of the sun! But the guard looked very cool despite the velvet pants and dazzled the crowds with their performance. We got many compliments on our “awesome” uniforms, and thanks for participating in the festival and were even asked to participate in the upcoming weeks at Salem’s Farmer’s Market. We were delighted that so many friends came for the 1:00 performance – especially Arbella Alumni Managers/Parents Joe and Jean Kerwin! Thank you all for your support!
We want to give RITA (Cram) Sweeney – Arbella Alumna from 1980-1983 – a special SHOUT OUT for joining our ranks for this performance! We also want to send our very best get well wishes to Arbella Alumna and Member Patty Lavasseur who is recovering from a broken arm and can’t spin this summer now. Get well soon Patty!
Although a formative year, with all the joys that go along with a startup venture (constant search for membership, funding, equipment, etc) we are still making a wonderful impression thanks to the hard work of Joel Dube and the color guard. When the crowd sees us, the old timers always recall a story or two about Arbella, and it’s always positive. It’s delightful to have that affect on the crowds, and we look forward to creating even greater impressions as we grow!
